iDEAL and Wero

iDEAL has been a trusted method of online payment in the Netherlands for many years. Wero is the new European payment solution that will be introduced shortly. This page explains what iDEAL is, what Wero adds, and what the transition means for consumers.

What is iDEAL?

For twenty years, iDEAL has been the way millions of Dutch people pay online. Whether it’s a webshop, energy bill, or donation, with iDEAL you pay directly through your own bank.

  • Safe, fast, and trusted through your own banking environment
  • Included as standard and free of charge with every payments account

Since its introduction in 2005, iDEAL has grown to become the most popular online payment method in the Netherlands. In 2025, more than 1.5 billion transactions were made. Nowadays, you can also create an iDEAL profile, which allows you to pay faster and manage your personal preferences.

What is Wero?

Wero is a new European payment solution being developed within the European Payments Initiative (EPI). It will be the successor to iDEAL in the Netherlands. Wero has been launched in Germany, France, and the Benelux countries. The goal is for Wero to eventually be usable throughout the EU, from Ireland to Greece.

With Wero, you can pay securely and easily in multiple European countries, with the same trusted experience as iDEAL. Wero offers additional features, such as:

  • A digital wallet for multiple countries in Europe
  • Peer-to-peer payments between individuals in different European countries
  • Purchase protection against scammers and fraudsters
  • In the longer term, also payments at physical store checkouts

What will change?

From the end of January 2026, the transition from the brand name iDEAL to iDEAL | Wero will begin. You will continue to use iDEAL as usual, but the logo and brand name will gradually change.

  • From January 2026, you will increasingly see both names side by side: iDEAL | Wero.
  • From the end of 2026, the iDEAL name and logo will disappear and you will only see Wero.

For consumers, little will change in the payment process. They will still pay via their own bank, with the same security and speed. From the end of 2026, Dutch citizens will have access to the new possibilities offered by Wero, such as cross-border mobile requests-to-pay to other Wero users in other EU countries.
