Request-to-Pay

With a request-to-pay, you ask someone in a text message or email to pay for something using a convenient link, button, or QR code for the recipient. Requests-to-pay are often used for peer-to-peer payments, such as for shared meals, gifts, or group expenses.

What is a request-to-pay?

A request-to-pay allows you to ask someone to pay you an amount digitally. It is often used to ask family, friends, or acquaintances to contribute to a joint evening out, a joint gift, or something that someone else has paid for in advance.

Many banks allow you to send a request-to-pay to one or more people via mobile banking or internet banking, using a mobile messaging service or email. To do this, you enter the amount and a short message. You can then send the request-to-pay to one or more people via a messaging service such as SMS or email. The recipients click on a link or button to pay via their own bank, usually via iDEAL.

You can also create a QR code for a request-to-pay in your banking app and display it on the screen of your smartphone or tablet. Someone else can scan that QR code to pay. This is useful at a flea market, for example, when you want to allow an unknown buyer to easily pay digitally for your used items.

The person sending a request-to-pay and the person who has to pay do not need to be with the same bank. Anyone can pay a request-to-pay, regardless of which bank they are with.

How it works

Via your bank’s mobile app, via internet banking, or with Tikkie:

  1. You create a new request-to-pay (betaalverzoek in Dutch).
  2. You enter an amount and a message.
  3. You share the request-to-pay message via a mobile messaging service or email.
  4. In the message, you select all the recipients to whom you want to send your request-to-pay message.
  5. You send the message or email with the request-to-pay message.
  6. The recipients click on the link in your request-to-pay message.
  7. The recipients pay via their bank (usually via iDEAL).
  8. Each payment made is usually credited to your account within a few seconds.

In step 3, you can also choose a QR code in a banking app or in Tikkie. Show this to the payer who is with you. The payer scans your QR code with their own smartphone and then pays the amount using their own mobile banking app, usually also via iDEAL. Within a few seconds, you will see in your own banking app or in Tikkie that the payer has paid.

Security and reliability

Creating and sending a request-to-pay is extremely secure and reliable for both the sender and the recipients, just as secure as internet banking and mobile banking.

Recipients of a request-to-pay must always check carefully that it comes from a reliable sender. Not expecting a request-to-pay? Then first contact the sender via reliable contact details that you have used before. Also make sure that after clicking on the payment link in the request-to-pay, you are taken to a reliable, secure website or app.

Who is it intended for?

Anyone with a Dutch bank account can send or pay requests-to-pay. They are suitable for individuals, small merchants, and associations.

For retailers, it can be a convenient alternative in the event of card payment disruptions. Simply display a QR code on your screen so that customers can pay with their mobile phones without you having their contact details. It is also an accessible way for freelancers and small organizations to receive payments, such as sports clubs that collect membership fees or self-employed people who want to receive payment quickly for a service they have provided.
