About us

On behalf of our members, we organize secure, efficient, reliable, and accessible payments with an eye for the wishes of interest groups.

Cooperation as the foundation of payments

Collective payments are the lifeblood of our economy. They are very similar to utilities such as drinking water, electricity, telephony, and the internet. The members of the Dutch Payments Association are regulated providers of collective payment services in the Netherlands: banks, payment institutions, and electronic money institutions. On behalf of its members, the Dutch Payments Association strives for efficient, accessible, secure, and reliable payments, with an eye for the interests and wishes of other participants, such as consumers and merchants.

Payments are based on a complex infrastructure involving many national and international agreements between many different payment service providers who need to coordinate and cooperate effectively. The social importance of payments requires a platform where the payment sector and other stakeholders can meet and engage in dialogue about expectations, bottlenecks, and developments.

Cooperation in the Dutch payments system and dialogue with society are the reasons for the existence of the Dutch Payments Association (founded on November 29, 2011). On behalf of its members, the Dutch Payments Association participates in the National Forum on the Payment System (MOB). This is a broad social consultation platform for payments chaired by DNB.

Membership

Membership of the Dutch Payments Association not only gives you access to our network of Dutch payment service providers, it also offers you the opportunity to contribute to a secure, reliable, efficient, and accessible Dutch payment ecosystem. Together with our members, we ensure operational coordination within the payment infrastructure and dialogue with other stakeholders.

To serve our members and stakeholders, we immerse ourselves in collective payments and offer a knowledge center that provides users, journalists, politicians, and public administrators with figures, facts, research, and background information. In doing so, we also support our sector’s influence on policy and regulations concerning payments.

The pillars of payments

Efficient

The costs of Dutch payment services for consumers and business users are among the lowest in Europe. High efficiency for payment service providers contributes greatly to this. The Dutch Payments Association is committed to optimizing this efficiency and promoting it at the European level, on behalf of the Dutch payment sector and for the benefit of all users of payment services.

Accessible

Easy access to the collective payments system is an essential condition for full participation in society. Any barriers to participation in payments must therefore be as low as possible. Payments are increasingly being made digitally, using smartphones and computers, and it must be ensured that people who are unable to use these devices can still participate in everyday payments.

Safe and reliable

Safety and reliability are crucial for smooth and efficient collective payments in which everyone has confidence. In principle, payment service providers do not compete with each other on safety and reliability and share their knowledge and experience in this area as much as possible. The Payment Association contributes to facilitating this cooperation within the payment sector, together with the Dutch Banking Association.

Dutch payments in Europe

Standards and technical agreements are very important for the smooth functioning of payments. These matters are often regulated at European or even global level. The Dutch Payments Association represents the interests of the Dutch payment sector in the development of these standards and the establishment of collective agreements.
