iDEAL annual sales approach annual sales with debit card payments
While debit card spending at the counter rose by 2.8% in 2024 compared to 2023, online iDEAL spending increased by as much as 13%. The annual turnover with iDEAL is now almost as high as with debit card payments, according to the‘Payment traffic factsheet 2024‘ of Betaalvereniging Nederland.


Modest increase in debit card payments
The number of debit card payments at the counter and the corresponding turnover increased only slightly in 2024 compared to a year earlier. Volume rose to 5.77 billion payments ( 2.9%) and turnover to €147 billion ( 2.8%). In the years before the corona pandemic, PIN payments at the retail checkout increased at significantly higher rates. In 2018, debit card volume still increased by almost 13%.
At the point of sale, paying with a smartphone or smartwatch continues to grow strongly, although it was not yet the most used method of payment there in December 2024. Of all payments at the counter, an estimated 81% were card payments with a credit or debit card. Of those card payments, 93% were contactless. Of all contactless payments, 54% were with a physical payment card and 46% with a mobile phone or smart wristwatch.
iDEAL sales rose sharply
Paying with iDEAL was strongly on the rise in 2024. The volume increased by 10% to 1.47 billion payments. At €141 billion, sales with iDEAL in 2024 were only 4% below the total debit card sales of €147 billion.

Payment card travel in public transport is becoming more commonplace
Travelling with a contactless debit or credit card continues to grow steadily. Of all contactless passes used for checking in and out in public transport in December 2024, 41% were a debit or credit card, whether or not digital on a smartphone or smartwatch. The remaining 59% was an OV chip card. Twelve months earlier, the share of payment cards in public transport was 33%.
